God’s Holy Mountain
A Reflection by Fred Schaeffer, OFS
The Savior - the Messiah - will bring justice and peace. The explanation of Advent is contained in the readings at Holy Mass on the Sundays of Advent. We are anticipating the long-awaited redeemer and messiah, this miracle of peace in the world. “Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat; the calf and the young lion shall browse together, with a little child to guide them. The cow and the bear shall graze, together their young shall lie down; the lion shall eat hay like the ox. The baby shall play by the viper’s den, and the child lay his hand on the adder’s lair. They shall not harm or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be filled with knowledge of the Lord, as water covers the sea.” (Is. 11:6-9)
This is my favorite scripture because it leaves me with a great feeling of peace and joy. I would like to live in a world like that. Maybe in eternity but not yet on earth; first people must learn how to forgive each other, and also themselves. But that’s a tall order. Can it be achieved?
All the greenery, Advent wreaths, Christmas trees, crib scenes, are meaningless when these items aren’t accompanied by a spirit of well-being, charity, and joy in the home, in the workplace, the playground, and in our churches. It is said that charity begins at home. But when the home life is threatened by anger and abuse, charity goes out the window. The atmosphere in the home leaves a mark on the children whose behavior later in life could be damaged. With this Holy Season of Advent and Christmas beginning tomorrow, be kind to your children, young or old, and be kind to all the people you live and deal with.
Wishing you all, a peaceful Advent time,
Fred Schaeffer, OFS
